Paychecks for workers in Honolulu fall somewhere in the middle when compared to 405 other metropolitan areas in the nation. The average annual pay for workers in Honolulu was $45,100, according an analysis of the latest comprehensive salary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The figures are from May 2010, the most recent numbers available from the BLS.

The biggest paychecks in the nation are in the San Jose metropolitan area, where the average annual pay for workers is $67,850. The smallest paychecks were in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where the average worker makes $30,780 a year.

Meanwhile, a bill introduced in the state Legislature would raise Hawaii's minimum wage by $1 to $8.25 over the next two years. If the bill passes, it would be the first time since 2007 that the minimum wage was increased, KHON reported. The measure, House Bill 1682, would raise the Hawaii minimum wage from $7.25 to $7.75 on July 1, and to $8.25 starting July 1, 2013 -- $8.25 per hour translates to $17,160 per year for a worker putting in 40 hours per week for 52 weeks.
