OCS compiles new nonprofit grant opportunities

The Office of Community Services in the Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations has summarized new government grant opportunities that have been compiled by the Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.

Included are announcements for grants in these areas:

Health Grant Opportunities

4-in-1 Title V- HIV/AIDS Initiative

WHAT: These grants and supplements will be used to enhance HIV testing, including rapid testing and/or standard HIV antibody testing and to provide a more focused effort to address HIV/AIDS prevention by targeting some of the largest urban Indian populations in the United States.

WHEN:  Closing date is July 15, 2009.

Alzheimer’s Disease Supportive Services Program: Innovation Cooperative Agreements to Better Serve People with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders

WHAT: This Program Announcement provides an opportunity for states to develop innovative approaches to improving the delivery of services and supports at the community-level to persons and families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.  Under this Announcement, the Administration on Aging (AoA) is especially interested in projects that propose efforts to serve persons who are in the early stages of ADRD and in projects that propose efforts to create more dementia-capable systems for serving persons, families, and communities impacted by ADRD.

Human Services Grant Opportunities

2009 Request for Applications for the HIV/AIDS Prevention and Support Services for Women Partners of Incarcerated/Recently Released Men

WHAT: The purpose of this program is to establish a gender-specific, peer led HIV prevention education project for women intimate partners of incarcerated/recently released males. The project shall develop a coalition of support/transition services for women partners and their families through coordinating local/state departments of health, healthcare providers, AIDS service organizations, social services, community organizations, correctional facilities and criminal justice offices.

AWARD AMOUNT: $125,000

Community Living Program Cooperative Agreements

WHAT: Under this Announcement, AoA will award Cooperative Agreements to assist State Units on Aging (SUA) to develop Community Living Programs (formerly known as Nursing Home Diversion Programs).

WHEN:  The deadline for submission of applications is August 3, 2009. The deadline for submission of letter of intent is July 1, 2009.

AWARD AMOUNT: The average grant amount per state over the 24 month period is anticipated to be approximately $600,000 with the maximum award up to $1,000,000.  Because the nature and scope of the proposed projects will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size of each award will also vary.

Research Grant Opportunities

Registered Apprenticeship for Youth and Young Adults with Disabilities Initiative Cooperative Agreement

WHAT: Under this initiative, funding will be awarded through a competitive process to two consortia to research, test, and evaluate innovative systems models for providing inclusive integrated apprentice training in a high-growth industry to youth and young adults with disabilities, including those with the most significant disabilities, between the ages of 16 and 27.

WHEN:  Closing date is July 15, 2009. Applications are due by 5pm Eastern standard time on closing date.

AWARD AMOUNT: Award ceiling is $400,000.

Feasibility Studies for Collaborative Interaction for Minority Institution/Cancer Center Partnership

WHAT: With this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites applications for linked awards using the NIH P20 funding mechanism and intended for feasibility studies to assist researchers and faculty at Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) establish collaborative partnerships with the researchers and faculty of NCI-designated Cancer Centers (or other institutions with highly-organized, integrated research efforts focused on cancer).

WHEN:  Closing date is April 19, 2012.

Recovery Grant Opportunities

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009- Head Start Expansion  

WHAT: Funding will support an increase in the enrollment of additional children as well as create new teaching and other positions in Head Start programs. This expansion provides an opportunity for Head Start programs to reach groups, communities and neighborhoods that have not been served in the past.

WHEN:  Closing date is June 23, 2009.

AWARD AMOUNT: Average projected award amount is $500,000 per budget period.

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 - Strengthening Communities Fund - Nonprofit Capacity Building Program

WHAT: Applications will be accepted for new cooperative agreements to experienced organizations to provide nonprofit organizations serving as project partners, with capacity building training, technical assistance, and competitive financial assistance. The focus of this program is to build the capacity of funded projects’ nonprofit partners in order to address the broad economic recovery issues present in their communities, including helping low-income individuals secure and retain employment, earn higher wages, obtain better-quality jobs, and gain greater access to state and Federal benefits and tax credits.

WHEN:  July 07, 2009   NOTE: Applications submitted electronically via Grants.gov must be submitted no later than 4:30 p.m., Eastern Time, on the due date.

AWARD AMOUNT: Award Ceiling is $1,000,000.
