Hawaii Foodbank meets 2009 donation goals

Despite the bad economy, the Hawaii Foodbank met its goal for its 20th annual food drive, according to Linda Chu Takayama and annual food drive chairwoman Sheri Rolf, who said on April 18 that the organization collected at least 550,000 pounds of food and $450,000, although the final accounting has not yet been completed.

The Foodbank distributed 8.2 million pounds of canned and packaged food and 1.6 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables in Hawaii last year as part of the Foodbank’s Ohana Produce Program. A ten-dollar donation provides food for 25 meals.

As part of the Foodbank’s food drive this year, KFC Hawaii increased its “Change Angels” collection sites from three to eight this year. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., restaurant employees and volunteers collected food and monetary donations at the intersections near KFC restaurants in Aiea/Westridge, Ewa Beach, Kailua, Kalihi, Kapiolani Boulevard, Kapolei, Mililani and Waikele.
