The federal General Services Administration plans to spend $136.7 million of its stimulus funding for government buildings in Hawaii, part of $5.5 billion in projects nationwide that await congressional approval. Click here for a full list of planned projects.
It is unclear when GSA will officially release the list of projects. The building industry has been anxiously awaiting the list of projects, hoping to get a piece of the federal pie designed to bring the country out of recession.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed by President Barack Obama in February, calls for major new construction and energy efficient modernization of federal office buildings, courthouses and land ports across the country. Of the total $5.5 billion, GSA is planning to put $4.27 billion toward “high-performance green building” modernization and improvement. Funding for green building “full and partial building modernization projects” in Hawaii include the Hilo Federal Building (earmarked for $15.7 million) and Honolulu Prince Kuhio Kalanianaole Federal Building ($121 million budgeted for Phase I).
