NONPROFIT PUBLIC POLICY

HANO to launch public policy program with Dec. 14 workshop

On Thursday, Dec. 14, HANO and the University of Hawai‘i-Manoa College of Social Sciences Public Policy Center will present a workshop for nonprofits who want to better represent their agencies, missions and clients in the Legislature and with state government.

"Taking a Seat at the Table: Public Policy-Making for Nonprofits" will guide nonprofits who seek a seat at the public policy-making table to influence legislation and to share with Legislators issues and concerns they face in delivering contracted services.

This workshop will benefit executive directors, board members, managers and staff involved in advocacy and legislative issues.

This half-day workshop will highlight the critical elements and best practices of the public-policy making process for nonprofits. It will include an interactive discussion with Legislators. Participants will learn:

  • How policy gets made – the administrative rule-making and the legislative process.
  • The “rules of engagement” – when and how nonprofits can participate in policy making.
  • Strategies to educate lawmakers about community and nonprofit issues.

Presenters include Andrew Aoki, principal and co-founder, 3Point; Susan Chandler, University of Hawai‘i-Manoa Public Policy Center professor and interim director; Sen. Suzanne Chun-Oakland, D-13th (Kalihi, Nuuanu); Jerold Guben, attorney, Reinwald O’Connor & Playdon, LLP; Steven L.F. Ho, attorney, Torkildson Katz Fonseca Moore & Hetherington; Muthusami Kumaran, assistant professor, University of Hawai‘i-Manoa Public Policy Center; and Rep.
