Hawai‘i reading improvement initiative gets $10 million grant

Hawaii P-20, an initiative to have Hawaii's third graders reading at grade level by 2015 has been awarded a $10 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The project is led by the nonprofit Good Beginnings Alliance, the University of Hawaii and the state Department of Education. It was created in 2002 and focuses on improving achievement in public schools.

Past grants have been used for student data tracking programs and strategic plans. "Private investments have provided the initial momentum toward improving early childhood education in Hawaii," said Linda Johnsrud, UH vice president for academic planning and policy. "With this significant support from the Kellogg Foundation, we will build upon these successes and move them toward sustainability."
