HANO AGENDA, APRIL 2009

President's message:

Serve America Bill will be
a tremendous victory
for the nonprofit sector

A big mahalo to HANO's national organization, the National Council of Nonprofits, for its work in rallying all state associations to successfully usher the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act through both the U.S. Senate and House. In its current form, the act would expand national and community services programs and strengthen the infrastructure for volunteerism within the nonprofit community as well as preserve income tax deductions for charitable contributions. While the House still must approve the Senate's version of the bill or send it to conference committee, President Obama has indicated willingness to sign it.

NCN gets special credit for having the Nonprofit Capacity Building Act added to the Serve America bill as an amendment. The NCBA would appropriate money for capacity building in the nonprofit sector with rural America the first priority. When President Obama signs this bill it will be a tremendous win for the nonprofit sector.
