Kohala Center offers ‘cool farms, hot lunches’

The Big Island's Kolaha Center in Kamuela has announced a delectable learning event, "Cool Farms, Hot Lunches," a visit to Kawanui Farm with owners Nancy Redfeather and Gerry Herbert from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 25.

Visitors will learn about home systems for every aspect of food production on this unique experience in self-sufficiency. They will also taste 12 varieties of coffee and in-season fruits and have lunch with Redfeather and Herbert.

Kawanui Farm is an organic 1.2-acre experimental/educational mini-farm in mauka Kona. Established in 2000, the farm’s vision is to be a model for Hawaii’s home producers, and an educational center for the production of fruits, nuts, berries, vegetables and more. Kohala Center designed "Cool Farms, Hot Lunches" as a way for participants to connect with one another, with cultural and scientific experts, and with Hawaii’s Island's natural, cultural and spiritual landscapes. The Center also plans future events:

  • Saturday, June 27, at Hamakua Springs Farm with Richard Ha, “Working at the Intersection of Food and Energy”
  • Saturday, July 25, at Honopua Farm with Ken and Roen Hufford, “A Waimea Family Farm”
  • Saturday, August 22, “Agricultural Sustainability in Puanui Ahupua‘a: Past, Present, and Future”
  • Saturday, October 24, salt-making in the Ahupua‘a of Ka‘upulehu

On farm visits, hosts will share their favorite recipes. Space is limited; click here to reserve the Kawanui Farm visit now. Click on "Programs & Events" and "Current Events" or contact The Kohala Center at info@kohalacenter.org or (808) 887-6411.
