The construction contract for the multimillion-dollar Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center has been awarded to Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co. Construction on the 120,000-square-foot complex was scheduled to begin in March on a 15-acre site in Ewa. The project will create 300 construction jobs and nearly 100 permanent jobs when it opens late next year.
The complex will include, among other things, a 150-student preschool, a fitness center and gymnasium, an aquatic center, a dormitory and a 3-acre park for outdoor sports. Development was made possible by a $110 million grant from a bequest to the Salvation Army by the late Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc.
