According to the State Department of Health Community Health Division, a recent survey shows the overall 2006 smoking rate for Hawaii stands at 17.5 percent, a slight increase from 17 percent in 2005. The smoking rate for men remained at 19.2 percent, while smoking among women increased from 14.9 percent in 2005 to 15.9 percent last year.

While smoking rates stayed the same or declined for most age groups, smoking among 25 to 34 year olds jumped from 19.9 percent to 23.5 percent and among 45 to 54 year olds from 21 percent 23.4 percent.

The proportion of current smokers who reported quit attempts have decreased in all counties since 2005, with a very large decrease on Kauai. Quit attempts also decreased among people with low income, among all educational levels, among males, among those 35 to 44 and over-65 years and among all ethnic groups except Japanese and “others.” Quit attempts increased slightly among those 18 to 24 and those between 55 and 64 years of age.
