Nonprofit seminar to focus on finances, law changes

Chaminade Tax Foundation, Chaminade University, the Chaminade University Educational Foundation and the Hawai‘i Medical Assurance Association present the 5th Annual Nonprofit Organization Seminar on Friday, Sept. 26, at the Pagoda Hotel.

The seminar will provide officers, directors, members and managers of tax-exempt organizations and their accountants or attorneys valuable information to ensure that their organizations are properly and effectively run.

The faculty include: James P. Hasselman, CPA; Calvin K.Y. Say, Speaker of the Hawai‘i House of Representatives; Ray K. Kamikawa, attorney; Wayne M. Tanna, professor of Accounting at Chaminade; Charles P, Rettig, attorney; Sarah Tenney, vice president of Development for the USS Missouri; and Carl Williams, CPA.

Additional sponsors include the Castilione A. Casauria Foundation, the Hawai‘i Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations, the Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools and the Hawai‘i Association of Public Accountants. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and the program will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Topics to be covered include:

  • New developments at the IRS affecting nonprofits
  • Nonprofit directors’ ethical duties and obligations
  • Act 174, the new Hawai‘i nonprofit registration law
  • Nonprofit audit committees’ duties and obligations
  • General excise, use and property tax as applied to nonprofits
  • Nonprofit fundraising opportunities
  • New rules on Form 990 and audit accounting standards

Cost is $125 for early registration, before Aug. 31, $150 after Aug. 31 and $125 each for groups of three or more. HANO members can receive a 25 percent discount on individual registrations: $95 for early registration, $115 for registration after Aug. 31.
