Organizers of the Asia Pacific Volunteer Leadership Conference have dropped the registration fee to just $200 for the Sept. 16 to 19 event at the Hawai‘i Convention Center, which will equip and inspire volunteers to service to communities, businesses and government and nonprofit agencies.
With economic pressures mounting, many volunteers and organizations were making the difficult decision to pass on this volunteer management training opportunity. But the APVLC organizers responded by altering their conference plans and adjusting the registration fee.
“We know organizations are suffering from skyrocketing costs, the loss of jobs and health-care benefits, and a multitude of other challenges,” said Mary Matayoshi, executive director of the Volunteer Resource Center of Hawai‘i , which is spearheading the conference. “We want more people to benefit from our conference speakers and from sharing their own experiences with colleagues from around the world. That’s why we’re providing the same content but with belt-tightening measures, such as in the food menu and support services, to drop the fee to $200,”
Matayoshi says the changes in the global economy only highlight the critical need to reach out and support others through volunteerism. The work and support garnered through volunteer efforts is found to infuse families, organizations, and communities with hope when people face difficulties and challenges together.
Experts from the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand, and Micronesia are on the conference schedule to address issues in volunteer management, opportunities for the aging, disaster readiness and recovery, and pathways to peace and service.
