HANO Agenda, August 2009

President's message

Please share your lessons learned

When a reporter recently asked us about the state of affairs in the nonprofit sector as the new state fiscal year begins, I said we seem to be experiencing the calm before the next storm of cuts.

Some nonprofit executives are in the dark about the status of their contracts, waiting for the other shoe to drop. We were saddened by news of the recent closure of a small nonprofit in Hilo with an important mission.

At the same time, we are also hearing from some organizations that are flourishing in this economy, either by chance or through resourceful and creative collaboration or innovation. Clearly, there are lessons to be learned from what Hawaii’s nonprofits are experiencing.

Whether you're experiencing painful changes, ongoing challenges or successful outcomes, HANO would love to hear from you. Your lessons learned are valuable and worth sharing as we look at how local nonprofits are coping with the recession.

This month we are featuring a story about a “wild screaming collaboration” that involves a HANO member, the Malama Pono Kauai AIDS project. We hope you find value in it and enjoy this month’s newsletter.
