IS offers free workbook for good governance

Independent Sector developed the Principles for Good Governance and Ethical Practice in 2007, which many organizations have found valuable in evaluating and strengthening their operations.

To follow up and sustain that effort in partnership with BoardSource, IS has issued a new free, downloadable tool to help improve governance practices in a cost-effective way, the Principles Workbook: Steering Your Board Toward Good Governance and Ethical Practice.

The Principles Workbook will further support boards of directors and executive staff in assessing areas where their organizations are doing well and where there is room for improvement. It distills the core concepts in each of the 33 Principles and suggests key points for board and staff conversations about current organizational practices. Progress worksheets accompany each of the four sections to help organizations make plans and record their progress.

In less than two years, IS has fulfilled 100,000 requests for the Principles, a demonstration of our community’s commitment to strengthening governance, accountability, and transparency. The IRS is also planning to use the Principles as part of training its field staff.
