Micah Kane was appointed on July 17 to be a trustee of Kamehameha Schools. Probate Judge Colleen Hirai named Kane to a five-year term starting Sept. 1 replacing retired Adm. Robert Kihune, whose term ended on July 17. Kane is a Kamehameha Schools graduate and has served as chairman of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands since 2003. Previously, he was chairman of the Hawaii Republican Party. He holds a master’s of business administration degree from the University of Hawaii. He joins fellow trustees Diane Plotts, Corbett Kalama, Doug Ing and Chairman Nainoa Thompson. The position pays about $90,000 annually.
The boards of directors of Enterprise Honolulu and PBS Hawaii have both separately elected Robbie Alm as chairman. Alm is executive vice president of Hawaiian Electric Co. Inc. and teaches a graduate course in leadership at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. At PBS Hawaii, he succeeds longtime Chairman Neil Hannahs.
Enterprise Honolulu promoted Pono Shim to president. Shim previously was vice president of the economic development organization and succeeds Mike Fitzgerald, who held the president and CEO position since 2001. That board also welcomed four new members: Ian Kitajima, marketing manager of Oceanit; Kawika Kahiapo, Hawaiian slack-key guitarist and recording artist; Ken Hiraki, attorney and Hawaiian Telcom government affairs director; and Marissa Sandblom, vice president of Kauai-based Grove Farm Co. and president of the Grove Farm Co. Foundation. The 21 PBS Hawaii board members are unpaid and serve three-year terms.
The Boys & Girls Club of the Big Island named George Kalani Silva as its next chief professional officer. He is the co-founder and president of Hawaii Warriors Athletics. He also has coached girls basketball at Kamehameha Schools and was an assistant coach and junior varsity coach in the boys basketball program at Kamehameha Schools and Waiakea High School.
Goodwill Industries International has honored Douglas Smith as the 2009 Elsine Katz Volunteer Leader of the Year. He is a partner in the law firm of Damon Key Leong Kupchak Hastert and has served in several critical volunteer roles at Goodwill Industries of Hawaii.
Malakai "Mo" Maumalanga of the Adult Friends for Youth, was awarded the Farrington Way Award for helping youth and promoting safety at Farrington High School. A former client of Adult Friends for Youth, Maumalanga helps conduct Peace Council counseling group sessions with members from different gangs, social, or ethnic groups to work out their differences.
