We received welcome news this week: Before it will revoke their tax-exempt status, the Internal Revenue Service has agreed to allow non-filing nonprofits with revenues less than $25,000 to submit 990 N e-postcards by a new, extended deadline, Oct. 15, 2010.
The first article in the August newsletter includes a link to the complete list of 1,764 organizations in Hawaii that are at risk, as well as details on how to file. The list includes many “Friends of” entities and booster clubs that may not realize their tax-exempt status is in jeopardy. I encourage everyone to look to see if a nonprofit you know is on the list and share this information with them. For example, public schools will open again on Aug. 2 and this might be a good time to check on your school’s Parent Teacher Association if you’re a parent of a school-aged child.
On another note, Partners in Development and the health and human service advocacy group PHOCUSED are sponsoring a “No Vote No Grumble Campaign” and candidate forum. See the article in this month's newsletter for more information. HANO is pleased to support this campaign and encourages everyone to get out and vote in the special, primary and general elections this fall.
Meanwhile, please enjoy this month’s newsletter.
