HANO AGENDA, DECEMBER 2010

President's message:

Conference delivered strong ties
and stronger nonprofit community

We've heard enthusiastic reviews of our first annual Conference of Nonprofit Communities of Hawaii. Many thanks to our partners -- the Association of Fundraising Professionals-Aloha Chapter and Chaminade University -- and our generous conference sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers, the more than 350 attendees and the planning committees who made it a success. Our demonstrated collaboration with our partners resulted in great information sharing, networking and professional development, speaking directly to the conference theme, "Strong Ties, Stronger Community."

A big Mahalo goes to David Thompson, vice president of Public Policy for the National Council of Nonprofits, keynote speaker at HANO's annual meeting luncheon and facilitator of our Town Hall meeting, who addressed national and Hawaii-specific public policy issues impacting nonprofits.

Other highlights were a panel on fundraising in a tough economy -- featuring Robbe Healey, chair of the AFP international board, Barry Weinman, UH Foundation chair, and Kelvin Taketa, Hawaii Community Foundation CEO -- and an appearance by Lt. Gov.-elect Brian Schatz, who made a commitment to improve the relationship between state government and nonprofits -- a much welcomed message.

One HANO member said, "I met people at the conference that I would not have had the chance to meet otherwise. These contacts will be key to running my nonprofit better. The networking was invaluable."  For more information on other components of the Conference of Nonprofit Communities of Hawaii, see the related articles in this newsletter.

As 2010 comes to an end, on behalf of HANO's board and staff, I wish you the very best of the season. I hope you had a good 2010 and that 2011 will be even better.
