Free workshops on the legislative process offered on Maui

To prepare for the 2011 State legislative session, free evening workshops are being offered at numerous Maui locations to educate and encourage public participation. The workshops will be presented by Virginia Beck, the assistant public access coordinator at the Public Access Room, a division of the State of Hawaii's non-partisan Legislative Reference Bureau.  PAR workshops are free and no registration or prior experience is required.

Workshop topics include:
  • Easy ways to add your voice and ideas to the process that determines State laws and why it is important to do so
  • Overview of the people at the Capitol, what they do there and how and when lawmaking takes place
  • Handy tips for finding information and using the latest features on the Legislature website
  • Assistance in writing and delivering effective testimony, either at the Capitol or without leaving Maui
Schedule of workshops on Maui:
  • Monday, Dec. 6, 6:30 p.m. , Pukalani/Tavares Community Center
  • Tuesday, Dec. 7, 6:30 p.m., Kihei Community Center
  • Wednesday, Dec. 8, 6:30 p.m., Kahului Community Center
  • Thursday, Dec. 9, 6:30 p.m. , Wailuku Public Library

The engaging sessions offer helpful information for anyone wanting to participate in the legislative process.  Discussions range from "where to begin" to "what's going on," and will interest newcomers and practiced hands alike. Participants will leave with useful resources, renewed inspiration and a better understanding of the legislative process.
