Hawaii has 1,436 homeless households with children
According to the November 2010 issue of the Hawaii KIDS COUNT newsletter, published by the Center on the Family at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, 1,436 Hawaii households with children used homeless services during fiscal year 2010.
The Homeless Service Utilization Report was developed by the center in collaboration with the Homeless Programs Office of the Hawaii State Department of Human Services. It provides state- and county-level data about the individuals, families and households accessing homeless support services from agencies that input data into the statewide Homeless Management and Information System.
The following are statewide findings on families and children – county data can also be found in the report:
- In FY 2010, there were 1,436 households with children ages birth to 17 that accessed homeless services and were able to provide information on their children.
- Of these households, more than half (53 percent) were two-parent households, 42 percent were single-parent households, and 5 percent were intergenerational or households whose information was not reported.
- About 3,000 children experienced homelessness with their families and received shelter and outreach program services during this period: more than half (56 percent) were under 6 years of age; about one third (31 percent) were 6 to 12 years old; and the smallest percentage (13 percent) were between the ages of 13 and 17.
- Of the 1,354 homeless children aged 6 to 17, about 9 percent did not attend school.
