Upcoming HANO workshops (dates and locations to be announced)
  • "Budgeting Techniques for Nonprofits: A Hands-On Training" – Sound financial management and planning are crucial to a nonprofit’s ability to deliver cost-effective services. This half-day hands-on workshop, geared for smaller nonprofit organizations that do not have a professional budget analyst, introduces the budgeting process and preparation and is designed to help build the financial capacity and literacy of your board, staff, and executive director.  Participants will have access to a computer workstation and will complete a sample budget using Microsoft Excel.  Presenter: Allen M. Arakaki, CPA.

  • "Creating a Culture of Engagement that Results in Major Gifts" – Too often, nonprofit organizations that focus solely on "raising money" ultimately fail. Nonprofits that focus on engagement at all levels -- staff, volunteers and the community -- are much more successful at building sustainable organizations. This full-day workshop is designed for staff and volunteers who want to develop an environment focused on long-term growth and resource development. The morning session will focus on Creating a Culture of Engagement. Attendees will learn how to assess their organization's current culture and level of engagement and when and how to use a variety of engagement tools. The afternoon will focus on Major Gifts and other outcomes. Attendees will explore different aspects of the donor/organization relationship, strategies for developing and enhancing major-strategic-gifts programs, cultivating donors, recognizing legacy and endowment opportunities and incorporating them into their development plans. Presenter: Monica Grant, Vice President of Resource Development, YMCA of Honolulu.

  • "Finding the Fit" – This new half-day workshop will cover areas including accurately assessing income needs for programs, operations and capital improvements;  understanding the goals and objectives of various types of funders; strategies for developing relationships with various types of funders; and finally, how to determine a “fit”.  The latter will include a basic checklist for workshop participants to take-away to utilize in planning their organization’s resource development activities.  Organizations with a desire to have more individualized counseling following the workshop will be invited to contact HANO to discuss possible service options.  Presenter: Robin Johnson, Social Currency.

  • "Fiscal Accountability: Best Practices for Meeting Community and Donor Expectations" – Public interest in nonprofit accountability, particularly fiscal accountability, has been changing rapidly.  Both nationally and locally, concerns and proposals have surfaced on the use of donations for program services, executive compensation and nonprofit involvement in public education and political advocacy.  This call for increased oversight of nonprofits, combined with significant revisions to the Generally Accepted Accounting Practices, auditing standards and IRS revisions to Form 990 and 990-N, will require nonprofits to be more financially accountable or risk losing their 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.  This workshop, sponsored by a grant from Bank of Hawaii, will offer nonprofits statewide an opportunity to update their practices and ensure key staff and board members are fully apprised of these critical issues.  Presenters: Allen M. Arakaki, CPA, Brian Ezuka, Esq., and Hawai‘i Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations staff.

  • "Proposal Writing: An Interactive Exploration of Grant-Seeking from Hawai`i Trusts and Foundations" – This full-day workshop introduces you to basic techniques for researching grant opportunities. It is designed to enhance your skills in proposal writing for foundation funding and give you hands-on experience in preparing and reviewing a proposal.  Topics covered include: the history of foundations in Hawai‘i and current local and national trends in philanthropic giving, strategies for “finding the fit” with funders, how to put together your proposal and proposal package, and criteria funders employ when evaluating proposals. Presenter: Hawai‘i Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations.
