New Resources

HPIRC publishes handbook for island newcomers

As with other ethnic group newcomers, Chuukese and Marshallese newcomers to Hawaii face exciting yet challenging adjustments to their new community. The Hawaii Parent Information Resource Center now provides a free handbook, "Voyaging Together To A New Life: A Handbook for Newcomers to Hawaii," an acculturation tool for immigrants from the Freely Associated States. The handbook is available in three languages: English, Chuukese and Marshallese.

The handbook includes:

  • The important role of the family in the home and at school;
  • Caring for children;
  • Child safety in the home and in the community;
  • Hawaii laws; and
  • Low-or no-cost resources

The new handbook was the product of a partnership between the Department of the Attorney General, Crime Prevention and Justice Assistance Division; Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, Office of Community Services; Department of Health; Department of the Prosecuting Attorney, City and Country of Honolulu; and Goodwill Industries of Hawaii.

The illustrated publication provides a wealth of information about life in Hawaii and resources. Click here for more information or to download the handbook.
