New trustee to be named by Kamehameha Schools

The deadline to apply to become a Kamehameha Schools’ trustee to replace retired Adm. Robert Kihune is March 15. Kihune, who has served on the board since 2000, is leaving in June and the Probate Court has appointed a trustee screening committee that will narrow its choice to three top candidates. The court will then name the new trustee, whose term will be for five years.

The search committee is comprised of volunteer community members Robert A. Alm, Wendy B. Crabb, George Keoki Freeland, Francis A. Keala, Cheryl L. Kauahane Lupenui, Benjimin M. Matsubara and Michael Rawlins.

In addition to Kihune, there are four other members of the board of trustees: Diane Plotts, Corbett Kalama, Doug Ing and Chairman Nainoa Thompson.

Kamehameha Schools, founded in 1883 by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop as a nonprofit trust, operates schools on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island for more than 6,700 students of Hawaiian ancestry. It is the state’s largest private landowner with more than 360,000 acres.
