Governor-elect Dan Malloy of Connecticut

Connecticut governor creates
nonprofit cabinet post

From the National Council of Nonprofits

Connecticut's Governor-elect Dan Malloy announced he will establish a cabinet-level position in his administration to advocate on behalf of nonprofit providers and appoint a sitting State Representative to underscore the importance.

In making the announcement, Governor-elect Malloy said: "I have been clear that getting our fiscal house in order will require a shared sacrifice on all our parts, but I've been equally clear that I will not cut the safety net. Engaging the nonprofit community in a concerted, strategic way to maximize services and minimize cost will be a large part of the way in which we do this."

California's former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had created a cabinet-level position for service and volunteering, and Michigan's former Governor Jennifer Granholm established an Office of Foundation Liaison to help identify and broker strategic partnerships between the state and foundations. However, Malloy has broken new ground by appointing a government official to focus on the health of nonprofits.
