Free light bulb and book exchange in Kailua-Kona

Family Support Hawaii will host a monthly light bulb and book exchange on Wednesdays, Feb. 9 and March 9, at Old Kona Airport Park’s Na Kamalei Playground from 10 a.m. to noon. The public is invited to exchange incandescent bulbs for energy-efficient compact florescent bulbs for free. Interested parties can also participate in a book exchange, or simply donate used books, and receive literacy info and free bookmarks.

“This is the perfect opportunity for people to migrate over to CFL bulbs without the cost associated with the more expensive technology,” said Shannon Ramirez, FSH program manager. “While CFL bulbs typically come with a pretty hefty price tag, they can more than make up for the price by helping you save a bundle on your electric bills every month. CFL bulbs use up to 75 percent less electricity than incandescent bulbs, while providing just as much light,” Ramirez said.

FSH’s Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters, AmeriCorps program is partnering with The Kohala Center, Blue Planet Foundation and Hawaii Energy to host these CFL exchanges during their regularly-scheduled “Reading Is Fundamental” events.
