Honolulu Magazine’s online “Kokua Calendar” this month features an interview with Kelvin Taketa, CEO of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, on its recently completed study “Hawai‘i Nonprofits: One Fabric, Different Threads.”
The study was a follow-up to a similar, baseline survey completed in 2001 that looked at the makeup and economic impact of the state’s nonprofit sector. Taketa presented the study and discussed its implications at a number of meetings in October and November, including the HANO Member Meeting on Nov. 1.
Headlines from the study include: “Nonprofits contribute $3.8 billion to the state’s economy,” “Nonprofits produce nearly 8 percent of the state’s gross domestic product,” and “Hawai‘i nonprofits employ 48,500 people.” Besides those impressinve statistics, it also revealed many challenges and disturbing trends facing Hawai‘i charitable organizations.
