HANO workshop: Learn how to build organizational capacity

There are valuable resources available to Hawai‘i nonprofits to build organizational capacity. However, what that means and how your organization can take action is not always clear. On Thursday, Jan. 24, HANO will present a practical, full-day workshop, “Organizational Capacity Building – Making it Real,” to help nonprofits identify their strategic needs, understand best practices and acquire resources to implement capacity building projects.

The session is for executive directors, senior staff and board members and will provide practical tools to identify opportunities and pursue effective organizational capacity building. It will include individual exercises and case studies to connect capacity building to the specific needs and challenges of your organization. Participants will learn:

  • Principles and methods of effective organizational capacity building and how to apply them to your organization
  • How to use assessment to identify strategic issues that can be best leveraged for organizational change and success
  • How to build on organizational strengths and identify and adapt best practices to suit your organization
  • How to access grants and other resources for capacity building and how to use consultants and other outside resources for capacity building

Presenters are David Plettner, Mark Anderson and/or Karen Masaki, Principals of The Cultural+Planning Group, a management consulting firm based in Honolulu and Los Angeles.  The firm has worked with Hawai‘i Community Foundation and mainland funders to create and improve capacity building programs and has also consulted with nonprofits in Hawai`i and nationally in capacity building projects, including assessments and strategic planning.

The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Honolulu Community Action Program training room, One South King Building, 33 South King St., Suite 300, Honolulu; registration opens at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $100 for HANO members and Aloha United Way partner agencies; $160 for nonmembers. Materials, morning refreshments and lunch are included. Click here to register by Wednesday, Jan. 16.
