Nominations sought for Hawai‘i Spirit of Youth Award

The Hawaii Spirit of Youth Award recognizes and celebrates a young adult who has made great strides despite involvement with the juvenile justice system and is currently making significant contributions to the State of Hawai‘i, someone who exemplifies the importance of the rehabilitative focus of the juvenile justice system, as well as the power of personal achievement.

The award is presented by the Hawaii Youth Committee, a subcommittee of the Juvenile Justice State Advisory Council, a governor-appointed group of citizens concerned about the youth of Hawai‘i, which provides a voice for Hawaii’s youth within the JJSAC.  Nominees must satisfy these criteria:

  • Must be under 27 years at the time of nomination.
  • Must not be a member of the Hawaii JJSAC or the HYC.
  • Must have been involved in the court system as a juvenile in the juvenile justice or delinquency area of the court system – not just in the foster care side of the court system.
  • Must currently be involved, directly or indirectly, in bettering the lives of at-risk youth, or “giving back” in Hawai‘i.

Anyone can make a nomination; click here to download the application packet. HYC will maintain appropriate confidentiality when handling applications and after review will present the three top prospects names and nomination forms to the JJSAC for a final decision and approval of the recipient.

The recipient must sign a release form granting the HYC permission to use descriptive material and photos without compensation for the express purpose for promoting recognition or the recipient, the award and the organization. He or she will receive an honorary plaque, travel and lodging accommodations to attend the Coalition for Juvenile Justice Conference in 2008, subject to availability of funds.

The deadline for nominations is Feb. 16.  Mail or deliver application forms to Hawaii Youth Committee — Hawaii Spirit of Youth Award, c/o Office of Youth Services, 820 Mililani Street, Suite 817, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813, Attention: Ed Chargualaf.
