The Independent Sector is seeking candidates of “stature and achievement” for the 2009 John W. Gardner Leadership Award. This award recognizes an individual whose leadership in or with the nonprofit community has been transformative and who has mobilized and unified people, institutions, or causes that improve lives. It will be presented at the 2009 Independent Sector Annual Conference, which will take place Nov. 4-6 in Detroit.
IS has presented the Gardner Leadership Award since 1985 to an outstanding American who exemplifies the leadership and the ideals of John W. Gardner, founding chair of Independent Sector and a distinguished participant in the country's educational, philanthropic, and political life. Accompanying this award is a prize of $10,000 and a replica of an original relief bust of John Gardner by the late sculptor Frederick Hart.
The deadline for nominations is Jan. 30. Visit the IS website to learn more about the nomination and selection process, as well as the 2008 honoree, Robert Greenstein, founder and executive director of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
