New Family Medical Leave Act poster required

In conjunction with the Family and Medical Leave Act, new rules become effective on Jan. 16. The U.S. Department of Labor has issued a new FMLA poster (click here to download) that employers with 50 or more employees must display on the company bulletin board.

The new poster covers the basic leave entitlement under the FMLA, as well as the new military family leave entitlement.  Of particular note is the section outlining employee responsibilities in notifying the company about need for the leave and providing supporting information, which does not appear on the original poster.

Meanwhile, the Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations says the 2006 State Labor Law poster used for 2008 still will be valid for use in 2009. DLIR says new posters will not be sent out “until substantial changes to the law have been made.” In the meantime, businesses that do not have the official poster are encouraged to download, print out and temporarily use the pdf version of the poster for the company bulletin board.
