HCF awards $1.57 million to seven nonprofits

The Hawaii Community Foundation in December awarded $1,572,000 in grants to seven nonprofits, Pacific Business News reported. The grants were part of a pilot project in which the foundation invited 14 organizations to apply and nine proposals were submitted.

Receiving the grants were the Coalition for a Drug Free Hawaii, $282,000; Good Beginnings Alliance, $300,000; Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education, $285,000; Hawaii Capital Cultural District, $60,000; Hawaii State Primary Care Association, $300,000; Honolulu Culture and Arts District Association, $120,000; and Mental Health America of Hawaii, $225,000.

The foundation targeted intermediary groups, which have struggled with funding this year due to the economic slowdown. Intermediary groups unite nonprofits that otherwise would be isolated, said Chris van Bergeijk, vice president of programs for the foundation.
