The ability to effectively advocate on behalf of issues and constituents is a characteristic of high-impact nonprofit organizations. Organizations that connect with and inspire clients and donors must also connect with legislators and form strong networks to better attain their goals. Most nonprofit leaders agree they should do more in this arena but they are held back by lack of skills or knowledge and/or concerns about engaging in politics.
A full-day HANO workshop on Thursday, Jan. 14 will focus on key areas that will help nonprofits realize their full potential through advocating for their clients and communities. In addition to new insights and understanding, the workshop will help you form networks with peers to exchange information and provide mutual support. A luncheon session will present a new online public policy tool and feature a Q&A session with a legislator and a lobbyist.
A brownbag lunch session will feature presentations by a panel: nonprofit lobbyist Bob Toyofuku, who will provide tips on lobbying at the Legislature; Senator Les Ihara, who will discuss trends in information-sharing at the Legislature; and Kevin Vaccarello and Kory Paine of Joots, who will share information about a new online policy tracking tool.

With the 2010 elections just around the corner, this year’s panel will be an especially relevant discussion on current lobbying and campaigning standards and feature an overview of current issues in lobbying and campaign spending by Barbara Wong, executive director for the Hawaii State Campaign Commission. A panel of legal experts -- Leroy Colombe, Matthew Matsunaga, Terry Thomason and Daniel Mollway -- will answer real-world questions about lobbying and campaign spending in an election year.
