Nonprofit leadership award nominations due Aug. 10

The Pacific Business News' Cades Foundation Nonprofit Leadership Award recognizes a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit that has identified important community needs or issues and responded by resolving them creatively and innovatively. The winner receives $10,000 and the four finalists each receive $1,000.

This is the sixth year that nonprofits have been a part of the Business Leadership Hawaii program. “It was started,” said Larry Fuller, PBN publisher, “because of the great work being done by non-profits in Hawai‘i and how effectively and efficiently so many of them operate with limited financial resources.”

PBN is now asking for nominations for that and five other 2007 Business Leadership Hawaii award categories:

  • Ernst & Young Business Leader of the Year honors an individual from the business, public or nonprofit sector who has made a significant difference in Hawaii.
  • Best in Business, Division I, for companies with more than 100 employees.
  • Best in Business, Division II, for companies with fewer than 100 employees.
  • Innovative Company of the Year recognizes leadership by a for-profit company that has established itself as an innovator, a change agent and an out-of-the-box and on-the-edge organization.
  • Community Spirit Award recognizes a for-profit company making significant contributions to the community.

Click here to make a nomination online or call (808) 955-8100 or email Doreen Tavares at dtavares@bizjournals.com for a copy of the nomination guide with all the nomination forms and information. To encourage self-nominations, nominators are never revealed, not even to the judges. Nomination deadline is Friday, August 10.

Last year, the winning organization was the Institute for Human Services and the  finalists were Hale Opio Kauai, Hina Mauka, Mental Health Kokua and Molokai Community Health Center.

The nomination letter is limited to three pages and two letters of support also are needed. Financial information is requested, but that’s not a determining factor in the award as long as viability is demonstrated.

For the first time, three of the five finalists will be human-services nonprofits and two will be from other types of nonprofits. Judges will select five finalists in each category and only those names will be announced. The winner will be selected by judges from either category.

Individuals and companies not selected as finalists are notified. Judges are respected business leaders in Hawaii, some of whom are previous winners, and act independently – PBN does not influence their selections. Winners will be announced at the Business Leadership Hawaii event on Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
