Learn nonprofit budgeting techniques on Molokai

Sound financial management and planning are crucial to a nonprofit’s ability to deliver cost-effective services. “Budgeting Techniques for Nonprofits: A Hands-On Training,” supported by a generous grant from Bank of Hawaii, introduces you to the nonprofit budgeting process and preparation.

This half-day Hawaii Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Molokai Education Center, UH-Maui Community College, 375 Kamehameha V Highway in Kaunakakai. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. The hands-on program will give you experience preparing a budget using Microsoft Excel and provide a sample Excel-based budgeting tool for you to take back to your organization.

Who should attend? This workshop is geared for smaller nonprofit organizations that do not have a professional budget analyst. Attendees will learn:

  • The four critical things budgeting does for your organization: planning, communication, motivation, control/evaluation

  • Keys to timely, effective budget preparation, implementation, monitoring and modification

  • How to organize the budget process
  • Different types of budgets and tools for creating them
  • Budgeting for government grants

Presenter is Allen Arakaki, principal of Allen M. Arakaki, CPA, Inc., who provides accounting, auditing, tax and consulting services to more than 100 nonprofit organizations statewide. He also teaches the Financial Management Budgeting Module for Kapiolani Community College’s Nonprofit Management Certificate program.

The cost, a special low rate for Molokai, is $25, which includes materials and refreshments, but not lunch. Registration is limited to board and staff members of nonprofit organizations and there is a limit of three attendees per organization. The deadline to register is Wednesday, July 29.
