The state of Hawaii grew 6.9 percent in the past decade, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report released June 22. In terms of percentage growth, Hawaii County showed the most, at 19.6 percent, followed by Maui County at 13.3 percent. Kauai County had a population growth of 10.4 percent in the past decade.
Honolulu was ranked as the 50th largest incorporated area in the U.S. in 2009 with a population of 374,701. That ranking is unchanged from 2008.
The Census Bureau has created a so-called Census Designated Place for the area surrounding the city of Honolulu. The Honolulu CDP had only a 0.8 percent growth in population in the past decade, and accounted for 41.3 percent of Oahu’s population in 2009. Between April 1, 2000, to July 1, 2009, the Honolulu CDP had a 0.8 percent growth in population, from 371,657 in April 1, 2000 to 374,701 in July 1, 2009.
