Governor's plan to end homelessness gets $116,500 grant

The Hawaii Community Stabilization Initiative has announced a one-year grant of $116,500 to support Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s statewide efforts to end homelessness, specifically some of the initiatives proposed by Mark Alexander, the governor’s coordinator on homelessness, in his 90-day plan released in May.

These initiatives include housing and services for chronically homeless people with serious physical and mental health needs and public-private partnerships aimed at expanding job training programs and alternative housing projects, the organization said in a news release.

HCSI distributed a first round of grant awards totaling more than $1.4 million to several nonprofit organizations statewide in 2009. Throughout the year, these organizations helped hundreds of families avoid homelessness, financial crisis and remain stable through these challenging economic times. The HCSI funding partners include American Savings Bank, Atherton Family Foundation, Cooke Foundation, First Hawaiian Bank, Hawaii Community Foundation, H.K.L. Castle Foundation, Kosasa Family Fund, McInerny Foundation, Omidyar Ohana Fund, Seto Foundation and Stupski Family Fund.
