John Flanagan

HANO seeks new chief executive
as Flanagan nears retirement

John Flanagan, president and CEO of the Hawaii Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations, has announced plans to retire by mid-September 2008. Flanagan joined Hawaii Community Services Council in December 2002 and led that organization through an evolution. It officially became HANO in January 2007 and has grown from 34 founding nonprofit members in January 2005 to more than 270 today.

Inkinen and Associates has been conducting a search for candidates to fill the position, while the HANO Board of Directors has been working its way through an executive transition process, including updating the CEO job description and reviewing the HANO strategic plan.

The position was advertised in The Honolulu Advertiser in April: "The Hawaii Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations seeks a visionary President and CEO for this statewide nonprofit membership organization with a mission to unite and strengthen the nonprofit sector. This individual will possess the following characteristics and qualifications: knowledge of the nonprofit sector, statewide; strong leadership and management skills; proven abilities in fund development and major fundraising efforts; and effective communication and strategic planning skills.

"The position reports to the Board of Directors and oversees all administrative, programmatic and communications activities of the organization. Public policy and advocacy experience at the state level is preferred. Bachelors Degree is required, MBA preferred. Experience as a manager or active board member of a nonprofit organization is desired.

Flanagan plans to remain in Honolulu, where his wife, Mary Fastenau, is president of StarrTech Interactive, a leading web site development and interactive marketing company, which is part of the Anthology Marketing Group. Prior to joining HANO, Flanagan was editor and publisher of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, where he had worked since coming to Hawaii 1987. Previously, he had been editor of the Marin Independent Journal in Novato, Calif., and managing editor of the Wilmington, Del., News-Journal.
