Kupu, a nonprofit providing programs to promote youth education, environment, stewardship and cross-cultural exchange, is offering a new scholarship opportunity, the Aloha 'Aina Gen Fujikawa Memorial Award, through the University of Hawaii Foundation. The award is for $500.
Gen Fujikawa was a member of the Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps summer Molokai Team and Hana Hou programs who died in a diving accident on Dec. 23, 2005. The award was created by his family for a person who continues Gen's legacy of aloha for the people and nature of Hawaii.
Anyone interested in this opportunity must be a student at Kapiolani Community College or Leeward Community College (either the Leeward or Waianae campus) who continue Gen's legacy for the care of the people and nature of Hawaii through demonstrated action.
If you know someone who qualifies, please contact Brittney Orton, brittney.orton@kupuhawaii.org, for an application form to be emailed to Orton with a one-page essay describing what the person has done and what aloha 'aina means to them. Deadline for applications is 3 p.m., Thursday, June 10.
