> Hawaii People’s Fund announces spring grant recipients – The Hawaii People’s Fund is a nonprofit organization that raises money to collectively support grassroots groups working for progressive social change throughout the islands. Through community donations, donor advised funds and partial matches from Hawaii Community Foundation, the Fund recently made awards of nearly $65,000 to God’s Country Waimanalo (Oahu), Hawaii Farmers Union (Island-wide), Hui Noeau (Maui), KAHEA (Island-wide), Kaiao Garden (Hawaii Island), Laa Kea Foundation (Maui), Maui Tomorrow (Maui), Mauna Kea Ainana Hou (Hawaii Island), Na Maka o ka Aina (Island-wide and beyond), and Waikikena Foundation (Maui). > Science Fair gets $425,000 in ARRA funding – The Hawai‘i Academy of Science has been awarded $425,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to continue the Hawai‘i State Science and Engineering Fair, expand teacher training programs and provide support for the Neighbor Islands to assist students and teachers to attend the state and international events annually. The funding is from the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund, Part B as part of the ARRA, passed by Congress in February. Hawai‘i received a total of approximately $35 million in Part B funds and governors have discretion over how to use these funds. The Lingle-Aiona Administration has elected to dedicate all of the Part B funds toward improving the quality of public education, with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math. HAS is a private, nonprofit, professional society whose mission is to promote scientific research and science education in Hawai‘i and the Pacific region.
> Kahi Mohala Behavioral Health received a matching grant of $50,000 from Sutter Health for Phase II of its Lokelani Child & Adolescent Unit renovation project. Kahi Mohala has raised 75 percent of its $226,000 goal for this phase of construction.
> The Marguerite Gambo Wood Foundation donated $50,000 to the Girl Scouts of Hawaii to create a new program that enables girls and women to share their stories and perspectives to inspire and build leadership skills.
