What do you do with a ‘tainted’ donation?

What does a nonprofit aquarium do when BP Oil grants them funds for a new sea otter exhibit? How about the conservation group in Pennsylvania that received a major donation from a company that clear cut 44 acres of forest, without doing any impact studies?

Although many nonprofits are at the point where they feel they don't care how filthy your money is, many other groups are still resisting support from those acting in contradiction to their missions. For example, one group that worked against human trafficking refused Craigslist money.

For several months, Nonprofit Quarterly has tracked tainted-donor stories and commissioned Paul Dunn, an expert on the topic, to write an article on what to do "When a Donor Becomes Tainted." Click here to see the article.
