Hawaii gets more federal funds to prevent foreclosures

The state of Hawaii has received an additional $204,000 federal grant to support foreclosure prevention in Hawaii. The Hawaii Finance and Development Corp. said April 29 it is partnering with nonprofit agencies to provide free counseling services for homeowners in danger of losing their homes.

The grant to support the agency's foreclosure intervention efforts was provided by funds from the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling Program. State officials say that since February 2009, more than 800 Hawaii households have received foreclosure mitigation counseling through the program. The corporation's executive director, Karen Seddon, says the nonprofits work with troubled homeowners to avert foreclosures.
