From Pacific Business News

The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation announced on May 19 a public-private partnership in which it will donate a total of $10 million over the next four years to Hawaii’s public education system. The donation will support the state’s planned changes in its education system, as well as the goals set in its Race to the Top plan, according to a the foundation.

Among the goals in the Race to the Top plan are:

  • Recruit, train and place 36 “turnaround principals” in schools by 2014;
  • Support at least 55 percent of principals who lead high-poverty and/or high-minority schools being evaluated as effective by 2015;
  • Make sure every new teacher has a full-time, experienced and trained mentor by 2013.

The foundation has donated more than $10 million over the past eight years in support of principal leadership, aiming to reduce college-preparation gaps for high school students and achievement gaps that poor children face.

The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation is a private foundation that awards grants to nonprofit organizations that benefit Hawaii’s people, according to its website. The foundation currently is investing in public education, near-shore marine resource conservation and Windward Oahu communities.
