HANO launches Fiscal Accountability workshop series

Thanks to a grant from the Bank of Hawai‘i, the Hawai‘i Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations will present a series of workshops this year, “Fiscal Accountability: Best Practices for Meeting Community and Donor Expectations.” Public interest in nonprofit accountability, particularly fiscal accountability, has been changing rapidly. Concerns have surfaced on the use of donations for program services, executive compensation and nonprofit involvement in public education and political advocacy.

This day-long workshop, presented by Allen Arakaki, CPA, Brian Ezuka and Lily Bloom Domingo, HANO COO and program director, will be offered in Hilo and Kona on Hawai‘i Island, on Maui, Kauai and Molokai and twice on Oahu, where it will be presented for the first time from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 20; at the Honolulu Community Action Program Training Room, One South King Building, 33 South King St., Suite 300, Honolulu. Are your board members prepared for high performance?

Directors who are new to serving on a nonprofit board might be well versed on your organization’s mission and programs, but do they know about the role and responsibilities as board members? How to find the right funder for your project

“Finding the Fit” is a new workshop offered on Thursday, April 17, by HANO and presented by Robin Johnson of Social Currency. It will focus on accurately assessing income needs for programs, operations and capital improvements; understanding the goals and objectives of various types of funders; strategies for developing relationships with various types of funders; and how to determine a “fit.”

Workshop participants will take away a checklist for planning their organization’s resource-development activities. Organizations that want more individualized counseling following the workshop can contact HANO to discuss possible service options through the HANO Grant Services Program.
