Goodwill, IRS, AARP, AUW offer free tax prep help

Goodwill Industries of Hawaii and the Internal Revenue Service are offering free help to low-income residents this tax season at volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites, which offer free tax preparation services to low-income workers, people with disabilities and other taxpayers.

“For 50 years, Goodwill Industries of Hawaii has provided millions of people with job training and work opportunities so that they can earn a paycheck and support themselves and their families,” said Laura Robertson, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Hawaii. “It’s only natural that we would also provide access to the tools that help them maximize their income and build their assets.”

Free tax help will be provided for Hawaii residents by appointment only on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. Residents can make appointments by calling (808) 284-3549 in Honolulu; (808) 315-0962, in Hilo, on the Big Island; and (808) 264-0280, in Kahului, Maui. In addition, AARP, the IRS, the State Department of Taxation, the Armed Forces, community organizations and coalitions, educational institutions and financial institutions have teamed up to provide volunteer sites where trained community volunteers can provide free help, including assistance with tax credits for those who qualify.  Click here for a complete list of sites, dates and a checklist of what to bring.

The program offers help with preparation of basic federal and Hawaii income tax returns for those who cannot prepare their own tax returns and have low to moderate income.  Special services are also available for the Armed Forces, elderly, persons with a disability or limited English speaking.

These numbers are manned 24 hours a day and are free.
