Grants go to health care, homeless, museum renovation

Community health centers awarded $1.14 million – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $1.14 million to three federally qualified health care centers in Hawaii, on Maui, Oahu and the Big Island.

  • Waimanalo Health Center on Oahu will receive $470,709 to help care for uninsured patients, to pay for transportation services and to retain foreign language interpreters.
  • The Bay Clinic on the Big Island will get $349,228 to assist with salaries for its multisite community health system.
  • Hana Community Health Care Center on Maui will get $322,710 to buy medical supplies and pay salaries for physicians, dentists, medical technicians and support staff members.

Hawaii region to get $9.8M for homeless programs -- The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has directed $9.8 million in homeless grants to the Hawaii region. Honolulu will get $7.9 million of the funding; Guam will receive $910,153; and American Samoa will receive $4,087. An additional $662,837 is earmarked for emergency shelters, group homes and support programs.

Bishop Museum gets $1.7 million grant Harold K.L. Castle Foundation has awarded $1.7 million to the Bishop Museum for upgrades and renovations. The museum said the money will be used for the restoration of the Hawaiian Hall complex and upgrades to the Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center.
