Nonprofits react to three dangerous policy trends

In a purposefully provocative mini-series, An Uncomfortable – But Necessary – Conversation,” Tim Delaney of the National Council of Nonprofits, HANO’s national affiliate, documents three interrelated policy trends. These articles begin an innovative community dialogue facilitated by The Nonprofit Quarterly, inviting nonprofit leaders to share experiences and insights.

The two-part series, which Nonprofit Quarterly says they expect to be one of the more important articles of the year, concludes with an opportunity for readers to share proposed action steps for reversing these dangerous trends, which threaten the missions of nonprofits across the nation. The trends are interrelated and need to be addressed proactively with the nonprofit sector’s focused collective energy. They are:

  1. State and local governments shifting their fiscal burdens onto nonprofits and foundations
  2. Policymakers still knowing frighteningly little about nonprofit organizations
  3. Steady marginalization of nonprofits from the public policy process that, in turn, represses the voice of the American people.
