Small nonprofits reminded to file with IRS by May 15

HANO and the National Council of Nonprofits have been working closely with the IRS to keep small nonprofits informed about the impending deadline for nonprofits that have not filed an annual return in the past three years. For more information about this, see this recent New York Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/23/us/23exempt.html?hpw.

As the article points out, at midnight on May 15, an estimated one-fifth to one-quarter of the nation’s 1.6 million charities – including as many as 400,000 trade associations and membership groups – will lose their tax exemptions, thanks to a provision buried in a 2006 federal bill aimed at pension reform.

Please assist us in spreading the word far and wide to prevent organizations from losing their tax-exempt status.
