Independent Sector publishes nonprofit governance and ethics guidelines

Governance practices at nonprofits are at the core of a new report from Independent Sector that suggests, but does not mandate, 33 principles that nonprofits can follow to develop principles of ethics, accountability and transparency. The report is the product of 18 months of expert opinion and public comment. Titled “Principles for Good Governance and Ethical Practice: A Guide for Charities and Foundation,” it was released in late October by IS and its Panel on the Nonprofit Sector. The report is organized into four categories: legal compliance and public disclosure, effective governance, strong financial oversight and responsible fundraising.

HANO ordered copies of the report days after it became available to distriubute at its annual meeting on Nov. Unfrtunately, delivery has been delayed due to overwhelming demand. More than 15,000 copies of the Guide were ordered within the first week of its release. Click here to order printed copies.

Richard Klarberg, CEO of the Council on Accreditation and keynote speaker at the HANO meeting, was a member of the advisory committee that contributed to the new report.
