Hawaii nonprofit people in the news

> The nonprofit Close Up Foundation in Washington, D.C., has hired Kellie James as Hawaii-based community coordinator to increase support for Hawaii schools' efforts to travel to Washington on weeklong educational trips. She previously was a college adviser at Native Hawaiian Scholars Program, a subsidiary of the nonprofit College Connections Hawaii.

> Dawn Matsuyama Dunbar has been hired as executive director of After-School All-Stars Hawaii, a nonprofit launching comprehensive after-school programs in Hawaii’s middle schools this year. Dunbar oversees all aspects in starting up the organization and is responsible for the overall organizational management and leadership, fundraising, promotion of the organization within the community, and the development and monitoring of the Hawaii Chapter’s programs. She most recently directed the corporate communications efforts for American Savings Bank.

> The Hawaii State Legislature has named these winners of the 2009 Hawaii’s Outstanding Advocate for Children and Youth Awards:

  • Michael B. Wood – A board member of Family Programs Hawaii who donated $9 million for a shelter for children in Waianae.
  • Melissa Monette – Started the Harvest for Money, a nonprofit to collect food for hungry children.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu – for their outstanding youth development work.
  • Honolulu Community Action Program
  • Loretta Deliana Fuddy – Head of Family Health Services Division, DOH and board member of the Hawaii Children’s Trust Fund.
