Either the Bishop Museum, Falls of Clyde or Kilauea Lighthouse on Kauai – all of which are Hawaii nonprofits – could win thousands of dollars and a day’s worth of preservation efforts as part of Hampton Hotels’ national community-outreach program called Save-A-Landmark.
Hampton Hotels, Hilton Worldwide’s budget brand hotels, does not have a Hawaii property, yet it’s including Hawaii in its 2011 national campaign to refurbish “historical, fun and cultural” landmarks in North America. Hampton is giving people until Nov. 30 to vote online at www.hamptonlandmarks.com for one of the three Hawaii sites to “be preserved.” The winner will be announced by Dec. 2.
It’s unclear how much money and time will be donated to the winning Hawaii landmark next year, but in September the company donated $100,000 and the time of 50 of its employees to President Lincoln’s Cottage on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in northwest Washington, D.C. The work included maintaining the wood flooring, resurfacing cast iron balustrades and repairing the cottage’s stucco exterior.
