Elementary schools can apply for 2012 Arts Excellence Awards

The Hawaii Arts Alliance now is accepting applications from elementary schools statewide for the annual Arts Excellence Awards. Begun in 1994, this program recognizes exemplary schools that teach the arts as disciplines and integrate them into other subjects. 

Funding is provided by Hawai'i Arts Alliance and Hawai'i Community Foundation. The education committee of the alliance uses a rigorous process to select the schools.  Click here for the application and more information about this program.  The deadline to apply is Jan. 30, 2012. 

The 2011 award winners were:

  • Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, Debra Badua, Principal, Sarah Tochiki, Band Director/Fine Arts Department Head, $3,000 Award, funded by the Robert Emens Black fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation
  • Niu Valley Middle School, Justin Mew, Principal, NIcholas Black, Visual Arts Teacher, $2,000 Award, funded by the Robert Emens Black fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation
  • President George Washington Middle School, Michael Harano, Principal, Milena Nakatsuka, Visual Arts Teacher, $1,000 Award, funded by the Robert Emens Black fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation
  • Parker School, Carl Sturges, Principal, Maren Oom, Director of Fine Arts, $1,000 Award, funded by Hawaii Arts Alliance and PHG Foundation
  • Seabury Hall, Joseph P. Schmidt, Headmaster, Todd Van Amburgh, Performing Arts Chair, $1,000 Award, funded by Hawaii Arts Alliance
